Join the call for a referendum TTIP & CETA
Right now, the EU’s trying to push through a sneaky clause that’ll allow CETA come into force before our government even has a chance to agree to it.
It looks like the only official debate about CETA will take place next Wednesday in the Seanad.
This is our one chance to kick up a storm about CETA ahead of our government’s participation at the EU Summit. The Seanad debate gives us a chance to shine a spotlight on the EU’s underhanded move and focus politicians attention on the fact that a majority of people don’t want CETA.
Because CETA has been negotiated “far from the glare of publicity”, most people – including our Senators – aren’t aware of the consequences it could have. That’s why we need to raise a stir and get our petition to 10,000 signatures so we can deliver it to the Senators before they vote.
If TTIP and CETA (its sister trade deal between the EU and Canada) are passed into law, every Irish person will be affected in ways never imagined before. Corporations will be able to sue our government and food such as hormone injected beef will flood the Irish market. Irish farming, the environment, and our health will also be in serious jeopardy.
Legal expert Matthias Kelly has looked into what TTIP would mean for Ireland. He has concluded that it would be illegal for the government not to have a referendum on certain aspects of the deals. Specifically, the part that allows corporations side-step our court system and sue the government in private.
Right now, our government is only listening to big business. They’re working overtime to convince us that a referendum isn’t needed – probably because they have a very good chance of losing. Under pressure, they’ve agreed to a Dáil debate on TTIP and CETA. This is our chance to put the demand for a referendum front and centre of the mainstream political stage.
While thousands of people have already joined the Uplift community to stop TTIP and CETA, the research shows that Irish people know very little about it. That’s why we’re really stepping up the campaign to raise the alarm about the huge impact TTIP and CETA will have on our daily lives.
A referendum on TTIP and CETA would balance the power of corporations and put the decision on the future of our democracy in the hands that matter – the people.

Uplift, with support from trade union Unite, commissioned a Red C public opinion poll on the TTIP and CETA trade deals and the results are pretty amazing – 74% of people in Ireland want a referendum on TTIP and CETA.
