Irish Neutrality – Save the Triple Lock

By 17th January 2025 No Comments
Peacekeepers not Battlegroups

Irish people are extremely proud of our long-standing neutrality and history as peacemakers, not warmongers.

But a small number of Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael politicians want to change that.

The new Programme for Government clearly aims to make changes to our neutrality and get rid of the Triple Lock.

What is the Triple Lock?

The Triple Lock is the only thing that guarantees that Ireland doesn’t get dragged into illegal wars like Iraq and Afghanistan.

It stops any politicians from deciding to send our soldiers abroad unless they have permission from:

  1. The Irish government
  2. The Dáil (government AND opposition TDs)
  3. The United Nations

The Triple Lock has served us well and ensured that Irish soldiers only take part on peacekeeping missions where they are welcomed by the people of the region.

Public support for Neutrality

Uplift members chipped in for nationwide polling, conducted by independent polling company Ireland Thinks, and the results were overwhelming.

The vast majority of people in Ireland support neutrality. 75% of people want to keep Ireland’s neutrality exactly as it is.

The new government has absolutely no mandate to get rid of the Triple Lock or make any changes to Ireland’s neutrality.

Across all age groups, regions and political parties (even within Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael), the vast majority of people in Ireland want our neutrality to remain unchanged.

Neutrality Webinar

On Tuesday 14th January 2025, Uplift hosted a public webinar with expert speakers to discuss Ireland’s neutrality and the new government’s attempts to get rid of the Triple Lock.

Speakers on the day were Mark Price, Co-Chair of the Irish Anti-War Movement and founding member of the Irish Neutrality League and Niamh Ní Bhriain, Programme Coordinator for War and Pacification at the Transnational Institute.

How can I help?

We know there’s no support for getting rid of the Triple Lock and there’s even divides within the government parties.

You can use our free tool here to call the Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael head offices and tell them that you reject their attempts to get rid of our neutrality.

Don’t worry, you won’t have to debate anyone, just leave a message with the secretary or on the answering machine.

There’s a full script with things you can say.
