Let’s Ban Glyphosate in Ireland

Poisonous and probably carcinogenic1 Glyphosate – commonly known as Roundup is everywhere and now we have a chance to make sure it’s banned for good. When one million signatures are gathered, the European Commission will be forced to respond – including the possibility of introducing legislation.

The rules on how European Citizens Initiatives2 work are really strict. In addition to the one million signatures, they have to be gathered across a certain number of EU countries. This means that in Ireland we need to collect 9,000 signatures to meet the threshold.

The great news is that governments across Europe are beginning to wake up3 to the dangers of glyphosate. Unfortunately the Irish government is still supporting its use – despite the fact that we have the second highest level of glyphosate in our surface water.4
